5 star rating Highlight of Hakone Such a pleasurable way to immerse yourself in Hakone. The hike in the forests, experiencing the historic road and history, was a highlight of our time in Hakone. My favorite part was the stop at the tea house (13th generation of owners)and drinking amasake next to a warm fire, similar to travelers from the Edo period. Akihiro was the perfect guide. His English was easy to understand, and he provided just the right amount of information for us. My husband and I were thankful for a day of immersing ourselves in Hakone without having to navigate it ourselves. We ended the day with a boat ride of the lake and a trip on the ropeways as our means of transport back to Gora. - 3/19/2026

5 star rating A highly professional, knowledgeable and warm guide - 100% recommend! I tremendously enjoyed my day hike with Aki-San. His wide knowledge of the Tokaido path's history, geography and ecosystems supported me to connect in depth with its legendary Hachiri section, in a very embodied way, connected to nature and almost "re-living" the Edo period together. I really appreciated how Aki-San's expert knowledege of the area helped us to navigate multiple transportation changes seamlessly and spend time in secret, non-touristy spots with the very best views of Fuji-San. Aki-San is very professional and passionate about the Hakone region. I would undoubtedly call on him again for any future guided trip in Japan, and I recommend his services wholeheartedly. - 2/28/2026

5 star rating Great day escaping Tokyo!! Aki was an amazing tour guide! We had a very large group of 8 people and he accommodated us super well. Our group had varying fitness levels, so I will have to come back for the full hike. I would highly recommend this hike with Aki, it is a great escape from the city and really has amazing views. We got a great view of Fuji. Best of all was a surprise Aki made for us on the hike. See you again soon! - 2/07/2026

5 star rating Magical! We had a wonderful time with our guide, Aki. The forest and temple where he brought us were not full of people so we were really able to soak in and feel the peace and beauty of it. The combination of towering cedar and cypress trees, the waterfalls and zen gardens, the ancient statues and traditional temples as well as the stories and culture Aki shared really made the trip magical. Afterwards, the Japanese traditional meal was delicious. Finally the onsen, sitting in nature in the thermal pools, was heaven. Very highly recommend it! - 2/03/2026

5 star rating Amazing and unique experience with a spectacular guide Didn’t know anything about forest bathing before this experience. Aki was the perfect guide to get started with and the lakeside forest in Hakone was such a spectacular location—spiritual and historic with understated natural beauty. This was just the right level of immersion into nature without being too physically exerting. I felt so welcomed into a tradition that I was previously totally unfamiliar with. We did this tour on the last day of our trip to Japan and I felt like I returned with a newfound sense of connection to nature and time. We would absolutely use Coconuts Hike Japan again on our next trip—highly recommended. - 12/14/2025

5 star rating Five stars! Absolutely wonderful — 5 stars. Our autumn forest-bathing hike to the serene temple in Odawara was unforgettable. Aki, our guide, was incredibly knowledgeable about the local flora and temple history, and balanced informative stories with peaceful moments of silence. He was professional, very accommodating (even bringing snacks for everyone), and took stunning photos that truly highlighted the vibrant fall colors and the temple’s quiet beauty. I highly recommend this trip to anyone visiting Odawara in autumn — it felt restorative, well-organized, and beautifully documented. - 12/04/2025

5 star rating Forest Bathing - Saijo-Ji Temple - wonder guide Akihiro Just a wonderful time with our guide, Akihiro (https://coconutshikejapan.com/) who took us to a beautiful temple Saijo-ji (https://daiyuuzan.or.jp/) about 30 mins from Odawara station in Hakone. We went on a 2k walk up a gentle slope to the temple, and even though it was a holiday, the walk and temple were not crowded, only a few other people. And the leaves were in peak season with brilliant bursts of color. We felt like we were pilgrims walking up the path, isolated in a forest, and then reaching the temple with its beautiful colors and substantial buildings. Definitely worth the walk! Forest Bathing - this is a term for just inhaling the nature and trees along the trail to refresh the body and soul - it works! We appreciated the leaves and lack of crowds when we went to Kyoto two days later - where we decided not to go to some temples because of the crowdsAkihiro is an experienced guide, who grew up in Hakone often just miles from our hike and also has over 20 years guiding travelers into hikes and camping. He served us coffee and snacks at the top. We learned about the forest, the trail and the temple on our way up the mountain. His English skills are excellent and he was a good companion on the walk explaining nuances of the forest and the temple's history. Finally, he took pictures of us on our walk which reflected his skill as a photographer (later uploaded to us on Google Drive). Our hike culminated in a discrete tea house "Jinoma" at the foot of the trails, serving a vegetarian meal and tea and sweets. What a magical end to the temple visit! Definitely one of the highlights of our 2 week Japan visit. Beauty, leaves like fire against a green background, and a true sense of Buddhist tranquility. - 11/30/2025
