Prepare for a safer Hakone day

Hakone Hiking Safety

Understand trail surfaces, rainy weather, route decisions and what Aki needs to know before your tour.

Guests hiking a green Old Tokaido forest trail in Hakone

Hakone combines mountain trails, old cobblestones, forest paths and rainy weather. Aki plans each guided tour around the route, forecast and group—not around a fixed schedule that ignores conditions.

Guide training and group size

Aki is a certified Japan Mountain Guide and is Wilderness Advanced First Aid trained. Regular tour booking forms accept up to six guests; the private custom tour accepts up to eight. Small groups make pace and route decisions more personal.

Before the tour

  • Tell Aki about mobility concerns, medical conditions, serious allergies or recent injuries before booking.
  • Choose a tour that matches your normal activity level; use the tour difficulty guide and ask if uncertain.
  • Wear supportive walking or hiking shoes. Bring water, sun protection, a small backpack and weather-appropriate layers.
  • Request loan trekking poles or rain jackets in advance; availability is limited.

Weather and route decisions

Light rain does not always cancel a hike. If conditions are unsafe because of severe weather or a closure, Aki may change the route, reschedule or refund the tour under the published policy. Read the Hakone rain and weather guide and cancellation policy.

During the tour

Stay with the guide, follow trail instructions and speak up early if you feel unwell or the pace is uncomfortable. A safer alternative or an early finish is better than pushing beyond the group’s ability.

Compare tours by difficulty or ask Aki about your group.
