After the tour: From Mishima Station, direct Shinkansen services usually take about 15 minutes to Odawara and about 45-55 minutes to Tokyo. Returning to accommodation in Hakone usually takes around 1.5 hours, depending on its location and connections. Check the current timetable for your travel date.
How the day unfolds
Aki adjusts transport and walking sections to the group, trail conditions and timing. Steep or less interesting road sections are skipped by bus or shared taxi.
Meet at Hakone-Yumoto Station
Begin at Hakone’s lower transport hub and review the day, weather and route before travelling to the first trail section.
Walk toward Hakone-Hatajuku
Use selected forest and cobblestone sections, with time to understand the old highway and Hakone yosegi woodcraft tradition.
Rest at Amazake Chaya
Try traditional amazake and snacks at the centuries-old teahouse before continuing on the historic road.
Reach Lake Ashi and Hakone Checkpoint
Walk by the cedar avenue and learn how the checkpoint controlled travel. Mt Fuji may appear when the weather permits, but it is never guaranteed.
Cross Hakone Pass by transport
After lunch, use local transport to bypass exposed or less interesting road walking and continue toward the Mishima side.
Visit Yamanaka Castle and finish in Mishima
Walk around Yamanaka Castle ruins for about 30 minutes, pause for tea, then ride about 30 minutes to Mishima and finish with another walk of about 30 minutes to Mishima Station.
Realistic pacing: this is a full day with several hours on uneven ground. It can be split across two days, or Aki can use transport to skip sections that add fatigue without adding much interest.
