Traverse Hakone Caldera & Onsen

Small-group mountain hike and onsen day

Traverse a dramatic section of the Hakone caldera rim with broad views toward Mt Fuji, Owakudani, Lake Ashi and Sengokuhara when weather permits, then finish with a restorative onsen.

This hike is not offered in summer because heat and exposure make the ridge unsuitable for the regular itinerary.

How the day unfolds

The route and onsen may change with weather, trail status and facility conditions. Aki prioritises safe mountain timing over a fixed sightseeing schedule.

Meet at Hakone-Yumoto at 8:45am

Review the forecast, equipment and route. An alternative meeting point nearer the trailhead may be possible for guests already staying in Hakone.

Travel to the trailhead

Use a local bus to reach the start. Transport costs are shared by the group and are not included in the tour price.

Climb to the mountain ridge

The initial ascent is the steepest sustained section. A good fitness level and proper hiking shoes are essential.

Traverse the caldera rim

Move along the ridge through changing vegetation and seasonal scenery. Fuji may be visible, but the Hakone views remain worthwhile when cloud hides it.

Descend toward Togendai

Complete the mountain section and finish the hike near Lake Ashi with enough margin for lunch and the chosen onsen.

Recover in a Hakone onsen

Aki selects a suitable facility according to opening conditions and the day’s route. Discuss visible tattoos before booking.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the Hakone Caldera Rim hike meet and finish?

Meet Aki at Hakone-Yumoto Station at 8:45am. The regular tour finishes at Togendai Station after about seven hours, depending on pace.

How difficult is the Hakone caldera traverse?

This is the most demanding regular tour, with roughly four to five hours of mountain hiking. You should be fit and comfortable on uneven trails.

Is a view of Mt Fuji guaranteed?

No. Mt Fuji visibility depends on weather. The ridge still has wide views over Hakone, Lake Ashi and the Pacific when Fuji is behind clouds.

Can I use the onsen if I have tattoos?

Many onsen facilities do not allow visible tattoos. Covering sheets may be accepted; contact Aki before booking so a suitable option can be discussed.

Is this tour available in summer?

No. The regular caldera-rim itinerary is not offered in summer because of heat and exposed conditions.

What happens in poor mountain weather?

Aki may change, shorten or cancel the route when wind, rain, snow, heat or trail conditions make the planned hike unsuitable.
