A half-day walk in Hakone before or after your ryokan stay

A guided walk fits easily around a ryokan stay if you decide three things first: where the walk starts, where it ends, and what happens to your suitcase. This page answers all three for three experiences that fit a half day.

Three walks that fit a half day

WalkTime with the guideMeets → finishesEffort
Introductory forest bathing1.5–2 hoursMoto-Hakone Port → Moto-Hakone PortEasy. Mostly level, one short slope at the start.
Lakeshore forest bathing3–3.5 hoursHakone-en → Hakone-enEasy. Flat, many pauses, tea included.
Half-day HachiriAbout 3.5 hoursHakone-Yumoto Station → Lake Ashi (Hakone Checkpoint area)Moderate (2/5). 5 km in two sections on old stone paths. No drinks included; teahouse drinks are paid by you.

Add the journey to the meeting point and the journey afterwards. The forest bathing walks start at 9:00 or 13:00 (9:00 or 12:00 from November to March). Half-day Hachiri times are on its page.

Not sure which? Forest bathing is slow and still; you walk less than a kilometre. Hachiri is a real walk with history and views. Forest bathing vs hiking, explained.

Check-in day: walk first, then the ryokan

Most ryokan check-in is from 15:00, with dinner around 18:00–19:00. A morning walk fits comfortably.

  • Staying near Lake Ashi or Sengokuhara? Book the 9:00 Introductory walk at Moto-Hakone. It finishes about 11:00. If your ryokan is in Sengokuhara, tell us when you book: we drive home that way and can give you a free lift, subject to space in the car. Please ask early so we can confirm.
  • Staying near Hakone-Yumoto or Gora? Half-day Hachiri starts at Hakone-Yumoto Station, where most guests arrive, and finishes by Lake Ashi. From there the bus back to Hakone-Yumoto takes about 35–40 minutes.
  • Want the longest, quietest option? The Lakeshore walk at Hakone-en, 9:00 to about 12:30. Hakone-en is the least frequent bus stop of the three, so allow extra time.

Check-out day: walk, then your train

Check-out is usually 10:00–11:00. The afternoon forest bathing walks (13:00, or 12:00 in winter) leave the morning free. Tell us your train time when you book and we will tell you honestly whether it fits. We do not finish a group walk early for one guest’s train, so build in a margin.

What to do with your suitcase

This is the question that decides your day. Three ways, from easiest to cheapest.

ChoiceBest whenWhat it costsWhat to watch
1. We arrange delivery to your next hotelYour next stop is another hotel in Japan and you do not want to see the bag again todayDepends on the destination; we quote before you confirmAsk at least one day ahead. Tell us both hotels, the date, and how many bags. Your ryokan reception can also arrange this.
2. Hotel → Hakone-Yumoto Station serviceYour ryokan is a partner hotel and you leave Hakone from Hakone-Yumoto by train¥1,500 per bag (up to 140 cm, 15 kg); ¥2,500 for larger bags (up to 200 cm, 30 kg)Hand the bag to reception by 10:00. Collect at the station between 13:30 and 18:30. Not every property is a partner; ask your ryokan. Official service page.
3. Coin lockers at Hakone-Yumoto StationYou are doing half-day Hachiri (it starts there) and will come back the same wayLocker fee onlyLarge lockers run out on busy mornings. Hachiri finishes at Lake Ashi, so count the 35–40-minute bus back before your train. Station guide.

Full details of all four ways, with fees and hours, are in our Hakone luggage forwarding and lockers guide.

Two things to know. The station service cannot give you a bag before 13:30, so it does not help with a lunchtime train. And lockers at Hakone-Yumoto are a detour for the two forest bathing walks, which meet at Moto-Hakone and Hakone-en — for those, use choice 1 or 2, or leave the bag at your ryokan and go back for it.

Walk with a small day bag: water, a warm layer, rain jacket. In light rain, we still walk when conditions are safe; here is what a wet day is like.

Book direct

Breathe Hakone is the forest bathing brand of Coconuts Hike Japan; both use the same secure checkout. Book at least 24 hours before the start time (Japan time). Cancellation terms are on the cancellation policy page.

Questions

Is the shortest walk also the easiest? Yes. Introductory is mostly level with one short slope. If standing, sitting on a mat or getting up from the ground is hard for you, message us first and we will say honestly whether it suits.

Can I book once I am already in Hakone? Yes, for a date at least 24 hours away, if there is space.

Do I need the Hakone Freepass? No. It is optional and may save money if your wider itinerary uses enough of its covered transport. Freepass explained.

Which language? English and French with Aki. Mandarin and Cantonese with Carmen — ask when booking so we can confirm she is free.

What if it rains? We walk in light rain. If we cancel for unsafe conditions, you choose a full refund or a new date.
