Full Description

In this Half-day Hike Hakone Hachiri tour, you will start from Hakone Yumoto Station.

You will hike 2-3 hours along the old Tokaido highway some on cobbled paths and some on forest trails between Hakone Yumoto and Lake Ashi. Some part of this path is off-the-beaten track and we normally have the forest for ourselves. This part of the Hachiri has the best preserved cobbled path and more primitive forests. You will hike past the wood crafting village of Hakone – Hatajuku and we skip the steepest part of the trail by bus and reach a teahouse that has a history of 400 years. After an energising amasake, we will continue our hike to Lake Ashi where if you are lucky, you can have a picture with Mt Fuji and the lake view. The Hakone checkpoint is our last stop where you will understand the significance of Hakone in the history of Japan. At the end of the tour, you can then catch a bus or a ferry (pirate ship) to your next destination at around 1pm.

Full Description

You will hike around 8km in this trip and visit Amasake Tea House, part of the old Tokkaido Highway, Lake Ashi, the Hachiri heritage path, Yamanaka Castle Ruins, Mishima Shrine and Genbe River in Mishima. The transportation between the sites is either on foot, by local bus or shared taxi. The hike is for beginners and mostly on gentle slopes or cobbled paths.

In this tour, you will traverse the Hakone Mountains like Edo period travellers and understand the history of Japan using your own feet. You will see Mt Fuji while you walk if weather permits. This path is very scenic and can be for the beginners.

Hakone Hachiri is a Japan Heritage where you can experience how people traveled between Kyoto and Edo (today Tokyo) during Edo period (17-19th century). It is a part of the Old Tokaido Highway including going through the steep slope of Hakone mountains. These days, Kyoto and Tokyo are linked by bullet trains and buses but walking this path can make you understand the history of Japan from a new perspective.

‘Hachi’ in Japanese means ‘eight’ and ‘ri’ is a measurement of approximately 4km these days. Therefore Hachiri means the difficult 32km of mountain path which travellers in the past need to walk in order to reach Edo. In this tour, we will walk some parts of this 32 kilometre pathway and skip the steepest parts by buses.

Our Hakone Hachiri tour starts from Hakone Yumoto. We take the bus/shared taxi together to reach the trailhead and then we walk to Hatajuku where the Amazake Tea House locates. After some Japanese snacks and a cup of energising amasake, we walk on the cobble stone path along the old Tokaido Highway to reach Lake Ashi where we will have a break admiring the lake, Mt Fuji and the Torii gate of Hakone Shrine which is always seen in the postcards of Hakone. Then we walk along the lake and through the famous cedar avenue with trees over 400 hundred years old. After this, we reach the Hakone Checkpoint – the gate where the Edo government controlled the traffic of travelers.

Lunch will be followed in a local Japanese restaurant. After lunch, we take a bus to get past Hakone Pass and visit castle ruins. Then depending on your pace and preference, we either go to Mishima to visit Mishima shrine or come back to the lake area.

This tour is suitable for people who want to understand the history of Japan and who don’t mind walking around 8km a day.

Full Description

This is a forest bathing journey. We begin at Odawara Station, traveling by train to the forest area. Here, a 600-year-old temple awaits, surrounded by ancient cedars that have stood for centuries. These towering giants are central to the Shinrin-yoku experience, inviting you to slow down, breathe deeply, and absorb the forest atmosphere.

As we practice mindful forest bathing along the temple path, you’ll engage all your senses—feeling ancient bark, listening to rustling leaves, and inhaling phytoncides released by the trees, known to boost wellness. After immersing in the healing silence, we’ll enjoy lunch at a local temple chaya nestled in the woods.

The experience culminates in the ultimate Shinrin-yoku tradition: a therapeutic onsen within the same forest. Let mineral-rich waters melt tension while surrounded by nature. This seamless blend of mindful walking, cultural connection, and thermal healing creates a holistic Shinrin-yoku session you won’t find elsewhere.

Aki is an AMAZING host and put together a fantastic experience for my two elementary school aged boys and my friend while we were visiting Hakone. Because we were staying close to Gora, Aki understood we didn't want to go all the way down to the main station back-and-forth with our limited time so he customized our own adventure. Also, my boys weren't ready for an onsen experience so he researched other options and found a zipline adventure that they will be talking about for years. He even tested it before we arrived so he knew it was safe. So the overall experience was a special visit at a teahouse, a great forest hike, a visit to a beautiful shrine, a delicious lunch that even my somewhat picky American boys loved with beautiful views of the lake, and photo ops of mt fuji that were picture perfect...ending with the zipline adventure. His communication before the trip was top-notch as well, and he planned out all of our transportation needs so on the day of the tour everything ran seamlessly. Meanwhile, he documented the experience with so many awesome videos and photos, and somehow remained so patient with my rambunctious kiddos. It was definitely a highlight of our Japan trip we'll always remember. Thank you for everything, Aki! - 4/01/2023

Decided to book this experience because I want to experience the nature of Mt.Fuji area but also want something less intense than hiking/trekking for my mom. Akihiro, who grew up in the area, was knowledgeable and passionate about the history and culture of the temple n the cedar forest we went to. I felt like i had a true insider’s perspective on the area. Also, he was always willing to stop to rest or take pictures for us whenever we requested. He also prepared snacks and tea. About the locations, the thick cedar forest was so impressive and magical. We walked during noon hours but thanks to the shade it was a breezy walk. The temple was a calm and peaceful experience that I’d recommend to anyone regardless of their religion. Finally, the onsen was great, or it might have been just my bias coz I love onsen. There is an outdoor and indoor bath as well as a sauna. Apparently the men side also has an additional cold bath. You do need to cover your tattoo here. In the relaxing area there is small path leading to a heart-shaped rock beside a small stream. All in all if you want to try the more quiet and tranquil side of Japan, I’d definitely recommend going on this experience with Akihiro. - 3/28/2023

Full Description

This Traverse outer rim of Hakone caldera and enjoy onsen hiking tour involves 4-5 hour hiking in Hakone (about 8-9 km) and you need to be fit to complete it. You will traverse the outer rim of Hakone caldera and enjoy lunch and onsen in this experience.

The 90-min ascent up to the mountain top involves an elevation gain of 400 meters. You get to see the Pacific Ocean, the Hakone mountains, Owakudani, Sengokuhara and of course, Mt Fuji (if the weather permits) once you reach the mountain ridge. Then the 3-hour ridge walk gives you a panoramic view of the Hakone area. As you walk through the bamboo field, you will hear the birds singing, see sakura in spring, red leaves in autumn and step on the powdered snow in deep winter. After the ridge walk, you will go down the mountain in 30 minutes and reach Togendai. Lunch will be arranged in a local Japanese restaurant.

If the weather is good, you can see Mt Fuji most of the time while you are on the ridge walk. Even when Mt Fuji is hiding behind the clouds, you still have a view of Hakone town in this traverse mountain hike.

We take a bus to the trailhead. Transportation cost is not included in the tour price and will be shared by the group.

In this tour, you will hike like a Japanese – have a good onsen to relax the tired muscles after traversing the beautiful mountains. Many Japanese like to soak in a good quality natural hot spring after a hike. It is kind of a ritual when the situation allows. There are always onsen at the foot of mountains throughout Japan. It is lucky that Hakone is famous for its onsen quality. We will take you to our favorite onsen to enjoy after lunch. You will understand this Japanese hiking ritual!

We reserve the right to use a different onsen at the end of the hiking, depending on the possibility of seeing Mt Fuji. Most onsen facilities we use do not allow visible tattoos, but previous customers can enter if they cover their tattoos with powdered sheets which can be bought online. Please let us know if you need our help to get one.

The meeting point is Hakone Yumoto Station at 8:45am. Normally Mt Fuji is more visible earlier in the morning. If you are already staying in Hakone area the night before, we may be able to suggest another meeting point which is nearer to the trailhead than Hakone Yumoto. Please contact us for luggage storage or delivery options and how to get to Hakone Yumoto. Your guide is called Akihiro Wada, the owner and the chief guide of Coconuts Hike Japan. Thanks for reading our tour. We hope we will be guiding you in your hiking adventure in Hakone.
